Developing your Business Intelligence Strategy using Microsoft Products - Part I |
|
Microsoft's Business Intelligence strategy consists of the following analysis and reporting products:
-
PerformancePoint Services with SharePoint 2010
-
PowerPivot with Excel and SharePoint 2010
-
Reporting Services with SQL Server 2008 R2
These products fill the need in the following areas of Business Intelligence:

Query and Reporting
-
Analytics
-
Dashboards
The adoption of these products in organizations should be no different than any other product. Organizations should follow the steps outlined below to assess overall fit:
-
Develop sound use cases for each of the above needs (Query and Reporting, Analytics, Dashboards)
-
Develop your requirements based on the use cases
-
Evaluate the role of SharePoint in your organization (these products are tightly integrated with SharePoint and it is important to have a well defined SharePoint strategy)
-
Evaluate the Microsoft products based on the requirements
-
Execute Proof Of Concepts with the use cases to ensure business and technical fit in your organizations
-
Define the strategy for co-existence or migration
These steps should help organizations meet business requirements and optimize costs.

Taxonomy in SharePoint 2010 - Part I |
|
In our Dec 2009 newsletter, we introduced the Taxonomy feature updates in SharePoint 2010. In this newsletter, we will continue to highlight additional Taxonomy capabilities in SharePoint 2010. For additional information, you can visit our blog site for details from Netwoven consultants. Below is a summary of some of the core features in the area of Taxonomy Management:
Enterprise Taxonomy Scope
SharePoint 2010 offers a truly enterprise Taxonomy Management Platform. SharePoint 2010 offers an architecture that allows taxonomies to be shared across Site Collections, Web Applications and even Farms.
Central Management of Taxonomy with Separate Governance
SharePoint 2010 provides the new "Term Store Manager" and "Content Type Hub Site Collections" to centrally manage taxonomies.
Folksonomy (Keywords, Tags and Ratings)
SharePoint 2010 provides the ability to tag documents using a very lightly framed form of taxonomy. Via "keywords", users are able to appropriately tag items and documents without being forced to abide by a more strict taxonomical structure.
Managed Metadata Columns in Faceted Search
SharePoint 2010 provides a faceted search capability OOTB.
Taxonomy Navigation in Tree View
SharePoint 2010 continues to follow the inevitable ECM trend towards abstract physical storage with multi-dimensional findability via taxonomy.
Hierarchical Term Sets and Filtering
SharePoint 2010 provides the ability to store hierarchical Term Sets in the Term Store.
For additional details, email us or visit our blog site. You can also register for the FREE Taxonomy event on February 3rd, 2010. |
