Manufacturing Industry

Trends

According to sources such as the Semiconductor Industry Association, the chip manufacturing sector has been struggling since the middle of the current decade with single digit growth. A major economic recession will only complicate chip demand by softening device manufacturer margins. Current industry wide trends include:

  • Chip production is at full capacity, running 90 percent utilization levels while capital investment in new fabrication is slowing – which could lead to undersupply problems in the future.
  • Downward price pressure will continue by device manufacturers, although overall sales of consumer electronics such as LCD TVs, digital cameras and mobile phones are increasing globally.
  • The Asia/Pacific region is outpacing global growth. Frost & Sullivan believes the region may contribute up to 70 percent of the market’s revenue by decade’s end, with China leading and India the fastest growing. Leading companies should strengthen their plans for growth with acquisitions or partnerships in the region for back end testing or packaging.
